That danger was confirmed recently in a tragic national health alert: between 4 June and 14 July 2025, 38 people across England became seriously ill with iatrogenic botulism—a rare, potentially life-threatening condition—after receiving unlicensed or counterfeit botulinum toxin from unqualified practitioners  .

Affected individuals suffered symptoms including:

• Difficulty swallowing or breathing

• Slurred speech

• Facial muscle weakness

• In severe cases, needed respiratory support

This outbreak was traced to the use of unauthorised Botox-like products, primarily in the North East, then spreading to the East of England and East Midlands  .

Health officials from the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA), MHRA, and NHS England reiterated that botulinum toxin is a prescription-only medicine and should only be administered by trained, registered professionals using approved products  .
